These two pieces are designed to fit together and are not sold separately. The donkey’s back has a flat back, a different shape from the other Ostheimer donkeys to enable Mary to sit comfortably.
The abstract design allows for a pregnant Mary to be riding on the donkey towards Bethlehem approaching Christmas for the birth; she can also appear to be holding her baby Jesus on the journey to Egypt after the birth.
